Not looking forward to the long drive you have ahead of you before you finally arrive at your vacation destination? From personal experience, I can tell you that just sitting in a car for 12 straight hours doing nothing is no way to pass the time. There are hundreds of ways you can make the time go faster, possibly even enjoying your time in the car. All of these ideas might not appeal to everyone, but pick out a few and give them a shot on your next trip. I promise the trip will seem like a breeze (you’ll still have to get out and stretch every once in a while though
).
- Scavenger Hunt- Look for items on a list you made before hand and check them off when you spot them. Bus, Motorcycle, Blue Sign, License Plate Starting with Q, etc. (make up your own to add to the list)
- Alphabet Game- A thru Z, look at all the signs on the road to find words that start with letters in the alphabet (in order). Alternate turns to give everyone a chance.
- License Plate States Game - Print off a list of the 50 states and see how many you can find on the different license plates on the road (the longer the road trip the more of a chance you’ll have to get all 50). License plate bingo could be a different variation of this game.
- Take a Portable DVD Player - They’ve come way down in price and can make the trip go by that much faster (unless you’re the driver that is).
- Get a Puzzle Book- Look in the magazine section for Crossword Puzzle, Wordsearch, Sodoku puzzle books. Everyone can participate in these.
- Record Your Experience - take a camcorder along for the trip to document the craziness that takes place in the car. It’ll be fun to look back on.
- Use a Travel Book - Get reading material on the location you are heading to and plan some destinations you’d like to check out ahead of time.
- Start a new Book - For those long road trips, if you want to spend it quietly, there’s no better way than reading a good book.
- Bring your MP3 Player - Playing good music in the car (even singing along) can raise the spirits in the car, which will in turn make the drive time fly by.
- Play Your Handheld Games - Whether you have a PSP or a Texas Holdem Electronic game, bring them on the trip, everyone will have fun giving them a shot.
- Eat Some Snacks - What’s more fun than eating your favorite chips or candy in the car? Not much (Just make sure you pack them in the first place, or you’ll have to stop at a gas station to pick them up).
Alright, that’s the list for now. Let me know if you’ve tried any of these or have any of your own to add to list.

I prefer to leave late at night and let the passengers sleep, may not be fun, but with less traffic and commotion from kids, the trip flys.

I like when it’s quiet and everyone is sleeping or preoccupied too. Unless I’m starting to get tired, then I need some noise in the car to keep me awake.
