I find it funny that Ohio State fans hate us so much (and even resort to wearing F*ck Michigan stuff instead of pro-Ohio State stuff), yet we cheer for all Big Ten teams in the pre-conference season.

How does Michigan losing benefit Ohio State? It doesn’t. It makes the Big Ten look ridiculous. Ohio State has trouble with Akron until the 4th quarter, Iowa loses, and Wisconsin needs a last second score to win in Week 2.

Hoping Michigan loses makes sense during the conference season, but I guess I just have trouble comprehending how this makes Ohio State look good in any way. And if Michigan is bad or down for a few years, this is bad for Ohio State as well because it takes away from the rivalry. Back in the late 90’s when we beat Ohio State like 4 out of 5, or 5 out of 6 (whatever it was), I hated it because a good rivalry goes back and forth. Now the roles are reversed until Coach Carr retires, but the rivarly is still suffering.

If Michigan goes on to win the Big Ten this year, how bad does that make the Big Ten now look? And it is somewhat of a longshot, but our game is in Ann Arbor this year and we don’t play another spread offense the whole rest of the year.

I’m surprised this wasn’t blocked as spam… j/k Kyle. I personally have never worn a F Michigan shirt and only have OSU shirts in my closet.

I wouldn’t care so much about Michigan losing and would normally always cheer for Big Ten teams, if there weren’t so many Michigan fans that that live in Columbus that like to talk trash about UM every chance they get (same with ND, I might cheer for them if it weren’t for the fans and that fight song ;-) ).

I also find it strange that I keep hearing OSU fans saying Carr should get fired, while we keep beating him every year (I know it was the same thing with Cooper, but I bet Michigan fans were sad to see him go). The longer he stays, the longer the rivalry is one-sided in our favor.

Anyways, I hope my Michigan bashing doesn’t stop you from coming back to visit my blog sometimes. Are you from Michigan by the way?

John,

LOL. In re-reading my comment, I hope it doesn’t sound to negative. I guess sometimes I was just having troubles comprehending how that benefited Ohio State.

You certainly were not alone, as I heard about Ohio State fans in bars cheering our loss, etc. I’m a Michigan fan first, but I’m a huge sports fan in general and love to talk sports with anyone whenever I get the chance. I also try to look at things as unbiased as possible.

I know Michigan and most programs have their extreme fans that take things to far, but its always seemed to me that Ohio State fans spend more time hating other schools (and us in particular) than supporting their school. You know what I mean?

Ohio State blogs seem to be called Michigan Sucks, F*ck Michigan, scUM, etc. They even have a store I believe dedicated to that merchandise!

Michigan fans are definitely arrogant, but I don’t think they are violent or hate Ohio State the way you guys hate us. Again, that is a generalization, but it seems pretty common. It almost seems like Woody hates Michigan, so Ohio State fans hate Michigan, then they teach their kids to hate Michigan, etc. Do Ohio State fans know why they hate Michigan so much?

And like you said, is Michigan really a threat with Carr as a coach? (at least with you having Tressell, as he won like 5 of his first 6 games against Ohio State)

Anyway, sorry to get off topic. It’s not often I get to pick the brain of a Buckeye fan, as there are not many in Iowa where I live (a lot of Michigan fans though for some reason here).

I certainly wouldn’t let something like this prevent me from visiting your blog. I don’t even mind anti-Michigan stuff when it’s done tastefully ;)

I think if you were glad we lost to Penn State, or Illinois, or whatever that would make sense. I just didn’t understand other schools in the Big Ten being glad we lost to App State (and after this was written, to Oregon).

First of all, you write some of the longest comments I’ve ever seen. Keep it up.

Personally, sort of like I said before, I enjoyed the Michigan loss mostly because of the friends I have that are Michigan fans (yes I have friends that are Michigan fans). Coming into the season, everyone picked them to win the Big Ten, so it was definitely easy ammo after their loss (Yes, I know they can still win the Big Ten).

Maybe over the last few years the anti-Michigan talk has picked up because OSU is winning the games now, unlike back in the 90’s when they lost almost every one of them. Plus it is one of the biggest rivalry games in sports when they play each other so it’s possible people just get used to cheering against Michigan.

I think you’re right though about cheering for other teams in your conference to win non-conference games, because it just makes you look better. I can’t tell you how tired I am of hearing about how the SEC is the greatest conference in the world. The OSU lose to Florida just fed their conference ego that much more.

Heh, I don’t usually, unless I’m talking sports!

Anyway, the Big Ten isn’t very strong in college basketball, so it is definitely frustrating that overall we aren’t very good in football either.

I’m not a big SEC fan at all. Remember that while they think they are the best, the Big Ten pioneers everything while they sit back to see if it works, from the instant replay in college to now the Big Ten Network. The Big Ten conference is by far the most powerful, has the most games on national TV, and generates the most revenue.

I realy wish Notre Dame would just join the Big Ten, or give us Missouri. I just want a 12 team league and a conference championship!

John Bennett said in September 17th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I wonder how much money Notre Dame would lose if they joined the Big Ten (I’m sure it’s been written about somewhere). I could see Northwestern leaving sometime and it going back to 10 teams again.

The Big Ten Network isn’t very popular in Columbus right now because they never reached an agreement with any of the big cable companies. So most fans here didn’t get to see the first two OSU games this season.

As far as basketball goes, I hope the Big Ten gets better. I need something to cheer for inbetween football seasons, and March Madness is usually it. Hopefully OSU has another good year (although probably won’t be as good as last).

Kyle Eslick said in September 17th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

DirecTV and Dish Network both got the Big Ten Network, so anyone who wants it can make the switch (cable usually doesn’t have contracts so you can cancel anytime).

Dish Network is cheaper than most basic cable packages, and you get the NFL Network and Big Ten Network, plus more channels for free.

I do think its the same all across the Big Ten footprint though, as most all cable companies don’t have B10 Network yet.

There is only one way for you to have a better season than last year, and thats to win it all. Therefore, you probably won’t, but with what you’ve got returning you should contend for a Big Ten title. I’d just like to make March Madness for once this decade. I think it was 1996 since we last went. I think Beilien will get us there by next year, maybe this year if the Big Ten is as bad as it looks to be.
